Free Trial
Or is it?
The following text is based on this article: The Subscription Scam Maze: How Hidden Fees and Fake Cancellations Are Draining $2.8 Billion Annually
When we see a website or an app showcasing a free trial, it almost seems too good to be true. And it is. “Free samples or trial periods might end abruptly, triggering sudden or hidden fees. Fine print is buried or misleading. This is the entry point for most subscription scams, and it is devastatingly effective.”
The free trial is often the hook. You are usually asked to pay only a small amount, such as shipping fees, to obtain the product. But behind this “small” fee lies a trap. You unknowingly subscribe to a monthly plan that can cost $50 to $100. Many of these services start charging you immediately. Consumers often realise they have been billed for products they never bought or even received.
Furthermore, these businesses make it extremely difficult to file a complaint or cancel the service altogether. Often, they do not even bother to reply. Some companies go a step further and hire retention specialists, trained specifically to confuse, delay, or outright refuse cancellation requests.
So next time you feel tempted to buy something just because it is showcased as “free,” think twice.
